Intelligent Candidate Matching: Intelligent matching is the automated process by which an AI-powered ATS compares a candidate's skills, experience and soft skills with the requirements of an open role, producing a fit score. Unlike traditional keyword matching, it reasons over synonyms, skill ontologies (e.g. ESCO) and experience context.
Intelligent matching replaces classic keyword filtering on CVs with a semantic evaluation. While keyword matching rejects a candidate because they wrote "Java" instead of "JEE", intelligent matching uses a skill ontology (the most widely adopted is ESCO, the European standard) to recognise that the two skills are related, weighting them accordingly.
Typical components of an intelligent matching system are: skill extraction from the CV, normalisation onto ESCO or O*NET, vector embeddings of candidate profile and job posting, cosine-distance computation between the two vectors, and final ranking with configurable weights (years of experience, industry, language, location).
The main risks of a poorly calibrated matcher are algorithmic bias (indirect discrimination on gender, age, origin) and semantic drift: the model learns correlations from the training dataset that do not match the customer's real requirements.
