Extended definition

ESCO (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations): ESCO is the official European classification of skills, competences and occupations. It maps more than 3,000 occupations and 13,000 skills across 27 European languages. An ESCO-compliant ATS produces structured CVs with normalised, cross-border skills.

ESCO (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations) is a standard published by the European Commission to describe the labour market in a structured way shared across Member States. It is built on three pillars:

1. Occupations — over 3,000 professional roles with description, synonyms and mapping to the international ISCO-08 system. 2. Skills and competences — more than 13,000 entries classified hierarchically (transversal vs technical, hard vs soft skills). 3. Qualifications — academic titles and certifications mapped to national qualification frameworks.

For an ATS, adopting ESCO delivers three practical benefits. First, interoperability: an ESCO-structured CV can be read by any European HR system without manual translation, reducing friction in cross-border labour mobility. Second, matching quality: disambiguating "systems administrator" from "property administrator" or "tester" from "QA engineer" becomes automatic thanks to the ESCO hierarchy. Third, documentary compliance: EU-funded programmes (e.g. Youth Guarantee, European Social Fund) frequently require ESCO-formatted reporting.

Cumino uses ESCO as its primary ontology in the Voice-to-CV pipeline: when a candidate records a voice message, the system extracts skills and maps them directly to the ESCO taxonomy, producing a CV usable across the whole of Europe. For recruiters this means uniform search and filtering across candidates from different countries.
