Jumping from Jack

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Casino guests who experiment with different table and poker games, often gravitate to Blackjack because it is fun and requires minimal strategy to play on a casual basis at the casino. A few wins at Blackjack might convince them to try their hand at poker too.

There is a huge difference between the two games, and blackjack players have to make a dramatic mental switch when sitting down at a poker table. Blackjack is a game played against the house. Your only opponent is the dealer, and you only have to get better cards than the dealer’s. At a poker table, every player is an opponent and you could be up against as many nine hands that you have to beat. In Blackjack, each player only has to decide how many more cards to take and stop any more coming. A poker hand offers multiple decision points as different cards hit the board. Each new board card can drastically alter the possible winning outcome. Poker is far more strategic than Blackjack. When you are playing Blackjack, basically you are just playing the cards dealt to you against those dealt to the dealer. It is only about the cards. In poker, you are playing people, not just cards. It’s not just a numbers game, but a contest in which psychology and powers of observation influence a player’s chance to win.

Will Book Knowledge Help Your Poker Game?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Poker is an incredibly popular topic nowadays, and nor where is it more popular than in the bookstore. The shelves are filled with advice and guidebooks that promise to make you into an instant millionaire if you just follow their technique. I’m going to let you in on a little secret- you can’t learn how to be a winner out of a book. There are a lot things in this world that you can perfect just by reading a good manual, but poker is not one of those things.

Guidebooks are a great place to start if you are still trying to get a handle on the basics, but you really need to practice in actual game play to make the big bucks at the poker table. I would suggest that you start off with free games online, especially if you are still using your guidebook to reference hand rankings and the like. At some point you need to put the book down and play on your own.

A word of advice, if you are set buying some form of poker book to start you off, stick to just one book. Too many poker books just end up confusing because they all have slightly different advice for beginners. Find something basic, with hand rankings and the rules, and then practice online. It’s the best way to hone your poker game.

Deep Stack Sit and Go Poker – Ending the Game

Friday, December 5th, 2008

I had about 24k, the third place player had 18k and the big stack had just under 70k. The blinds were now 800/1600 with a 200 ante.

I was in the big blind again and both players limped in. I checked my option with Qd,3d. the flop came Ah, Qc, 3h. This was miraculous. I hit two pair and was hoping to trap someone who hit maybe top pair with a weak ace. The big stack checked, I checked, and the shorter stack shoved all-in for 17k. The big stack moved all-in as well. Now I was faced with a decision. Either player could have me beat with a set. More likely, they both had draws, or maybe one had an ace. If I folded and the big stack won, I would have had my 23k against his 87k heads up, about a 4-1 underdog. If I fold and the short stack wins, he would have just under 40k, the big stack would have about 50k and I with my 23k. Neither of those seemed good to me. If I call and lose and the short stack loses, I at least get $100 for 2nd place because I had was 2nd in chips when the hand started. I could also call and lose to both players and be knocked out 3rd with nothing. If I win, I get heads up with the chip lead.

I called. The short stack had a flush draw and the big stack had a weak ace with A,8.

I faded everything, knocked out 3rd place and took the chip lead heads up.

We both again limped into a pot. I had Q,9. The flop came Q, J, 4. I bet and he a little more than min raised me, and I called. The turn was a 10. now I had top pair and an open ended straight draw. We both checked. The river was an 8 of spades, giving me the small straight, but leaving k,9 as a possibly larger straight, and also adding 3 spades to the flop. He went all-in out of turn, oblivious. This was a little strange. He wanted to bet about 30k into a 20k pot. If he had a flush, I figured he would try and make a smaller value bet so I would call. I decided to bet 5k chips and see what he did. He instantly shoved again., for 25k more. I counted my chips and would have had about 25k left if I lost the hand.

I called. He was bluffing with ace high and I won the poker game.

The deep starting stack of the poker tournament allowed me to stay in the game even though I was not a very formidable opponent. I waited for my spot and made aggressive plays. I won my races toward the end and held up against draws. I now will be entering a $1,000 buy-in pokern event that I otherwise could not afford to play.

Getting Stuck in Poker, and What to Do about it

Friday, October 10th, 2008

In cash games, especially online poker, it’s tough to call it quits on a losing session. The action is always there and if you are properly bankrolled, so is the opportunity. When I’m stuck, I feel that I do two things wrong;

I play too long and with too many buy-ins.I up the stakes.

Being stuck in poker is a frustrating feeling. You can’t seem to see poker hands quickly enough. The adrenaline makes you play a little faster, a little more aggressive, and a lot looser. You want to play every hand, and tend to call raises with garbage in hopes of flopping monsters and getting lucky. In this manner, I burn through buy-ins by playing bigger pots. Sometimes, I can reverse the losses early, and getting to even is satisfying enough to stop, but on those occurrences that the losing does not stop, the player as to decide when to give up.

While online games are running all the time, it’s a better argument to take a break than it is to try and get your money back from the table. The game is always running and there is plenty of money to be won. Why not play the game at your best, un-tilted and well rested? If it’s hard to do this, add some rules into your gaming. Perhaps it’s a good idea to stop after losing 3 buy-ins, or maybe 10% of your bankroll.

Whatever you do, upping the stakes of your game in order to win your money back quicker is always a bad idea. A lot of times this is your first time playing at a higher level and you might not be comfortable. The players are likely better and the bets are surely larger than you’re used to. It’s like doubling your bet after losing blackjack hands. Ask any gambler to risk double to win zero and they will laugh. It’s the quick road to going broke.

If You Deal with Online Poker in America, You’re Going to Get Burned

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The US is notoriously adverse to online poker, and has pretty much banned credit card companies from accepting US-based business with a litany of anti-gaming legislation. However, a number of gaming companies use legal loop holes and off shore accounts to circumvent this legislation, and continue to do business with US customers.

It’s how the number one and two companies in the world can stay at number one and two, actually. They accept business from US players, and in turn are rewarded with a large market share and millions in profits every year.

That could be changing though. One of the big companies, Bodog, was apparently caught up in a government sting in January, and we are just starting to see the results today. More than $24 million in funds were seized from banks that had the money of US online poker players, and now Bodog is responding.

They say there’s no wrong doing here, but apparently an undercover agent took payment from Bodog and that was the catalyst that got things started. Seems like a pretty open and shut case to me. Do you think Bodog was dealt a fair hand, or is there something more to this case than meets the eye?
