Jumping from Jack
Wednesday, April 15th, 2009Casino guests who experiment with different table and poker games, often gravitate to Blackjack because it is fun and requires minimal strategy to play on a casual basis at the casino. A few wins at Blackjack might convince them to try their hand at poker too.
There is a huge difference between the two games, and blackjack players have to make a dramatic mental switch when sitting down at a poker table. Blackjack is a game played against the house. Your only opponent is the dealer, and you only have to get better cards than the dealer’s. At a poker table, every player is an opponent and you could be up against as many nine hands that you have to beat. In Blackjack, each player only has to decide how many more cards to take and stop any more coming. A poker hand offers multiple decision points as different cards hit the board. Each new board card can drastically alter the possible winning outcome. Poker is far more strategic than Blackjack. When you are playing Blackjack, basically you are just playing the cards dealt to you against those dealt to the dealer. It is only about the cards. In poker, you are playing people, not just cards. It’s not just a numbers game, but a contest in which psychology and powers of observation influence a player’s chance to win.
