Debt Consolidation – Best in a Recession?

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Is debt consolidation the most fitting financial solution for me? Now that we’re in a recession (according to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club Autumn forecast), it’s urgent that people with financial problems realise the differences between debt consolidation and the other debt solutions that are available – and see which one could be the ideal solution to suit their circumstances.

For a start, it depends on what happens in the future. In a recession, it’s more than likely to be not so good news – when consumer spending lowers and businesses make a loss, many companies will make people redundant just so they can save the business. For anyone who thinks their company is thinking about making some staff redundant, debt consolidation may not be the best idea.

Why is that? One of debt consolidation’s top benefits is the ability to reduce a persons monthly debt repayments. Consolidating debt is most effective when the person is in a reasonably stable financial situation: when they know how much they’re making and how much they are spending each month, they can figure out the ideal way of repaying their debt.

So someone facing the possibility of unemployment could be better off looking into debt management, instead of a debt consolidation loan. Debt management offers a flexible approach to debt: borrowers can ask debt management experts to get in contact with their creditors on their behalf, asking them to think about allowing reduced monthly payments, waive charges and/or freeze interest.

IVAs take a lot of commitment and can require householders to free up some of the equity tied up in their house. Borrowers must be able to commit to making fixed monthly payments for (normally) six years, based on the most they can afford when they have taken their needed expenses into account. Even so, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement can make a huge difference – for people whose debts have steadily got out of control, including persons faced with a quick fall in their earnings. Granted, Individual Voluntary Arrangements do require a level of financial stability: if the individual does not feel they could commit to five years of regular payments, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement may not be the right debt solution for them.

THE MISSING BIBLE

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

This is a short version of story number 30 (out of 50) from my recently published book, My Walk with the Lord, www.selahbooks.com , barnes and noble, amazon.

Ephesians 6.17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.”

On April 26, 2003, I went to a patriotic event at Memorial Stadium in Waycross, Georgia. There were many veterans present and several active duty personnel..Even Governor Perdue attended. Prayers for our nation were prayed, patriotic and gospel music was played, and speeches were made. I was proud to wear my old Army cap, and proud to be an American. Applause sounded as various veterans were honored—from World War II through the Iraqi war.

As I thought of my Army service, my mind went back to the day I raised my right hand and pledged to support and defend our nation. The Gideons had given us soldiers a New Testament on that day. That little book had followed me around the world but I had lost it. I loaned it out to a friend who had moved to South Carolina.

A few days later, this friend called me and I asked him had he seen my Army New Testament. He said no, his ex-wife probably had it. Two days later, he said the Holy Spirit told him to look in his box of rifle ammunition..On the very top of the box was my little Bible and a copy of the Lord’s prayer. The most powerful ammunition of all was on the top!

On May 19, 2003, Mike came from South Carolina and brought me my Missing Bible. Jesus knows where everything is.

Hebrews 4.12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Footnote,…On Novemeber 11, 2003, I was asked to give the opening and closing prayers at our local Veteran’s Day Ceremony…I relayed this story and there was not a dry eye in them old vets eyes….The Lord hears and answers our prayers

The Magnificent Power of Giving

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

You’ve probably heard of the popular saying “It’s better to give than to receive.” But do you actually know what hidden power lies within this magnanimous act known as “giving?”

When you give something from your heart without expecting anything in return, you release a powerful force that will trigger your good deed to “bounce” back to you in amazing, and sometimes unusual ways.

I firmly believe that whatever you impart to others will
come back to you a hundred fold. You are doing yourself a big favor by helping someone in need. By doing even the smallest acts of generosity, you are inviting good vibrations to come into your life.

You would be earning the respect and love of your recipients. You know that you will always have a loyal group of friends who would help, protect, and do anything for you just because they feel that they have to repay you in any way they can. Most people would have the urge or drive to reciprocate any act of kindness you’ve shown them.

However, this does not mean that you must expect them to repay you. Give without any expectation of rewards. Don’t do it just because you have an ulterior motive. Give unconditionally. Give because you are happy doing it. The universe will get back to you in its own special way.

Speaking of happiness, the act of giving can summon the spirit of joy to come into your heart. How would you feel when you’ve given something to your less fortunate neighbors? Let me tell you that nothing could brighten up my day more than hearing them express their most heartfelt gratitude and seeing their smiles extend from ear to ear.

Giving is also a healthy habit. It could prolong your life by instilling within you an inner sense of peace and accomplishment.

Just like all things in life, giving has its limitations. Being too generous can have its toll. Your kindness might be taken advantage of and people might abuse your good intentions. Beware of individuals who are continuously seeking your aid. It’s better to teach them how to solve their problems than to always attend to their needs.

As one saying goes …

“Give them some fish and you’ll feed them for a day. Teach them how to fish and you’ll feed them for a lifetime.”

Here’s what I consider the most important rule about giving. Keep your good deeds to yourself. Don’t announce to the whole world that you’ve donated $100,000 to your favorite charity or that you’ve helped save a child from a life-threatening disease. If you really desire to give, do it secretly and in private. Some people would write “anonymous” rather than their own names when they’ve made a contribution. The universe smiles upon these individuals, and they will get their just rewards in due time.

To most people when you mention giving the first thing that springs to mind is money. Sure, you can donate to those in need; however there are many additional ways to give. Give someone a smile, give some of your time, be willing to listen to a friend when they are telling you their problems and if possible offer some kind words. As giving becomes a habit more and more opportunities will present themselves. If you accept these opportunities your life will grow richer and warmer. Loneliness, depression or a meaningless life cannot coexist with a giving attitude.

A few years ago, at the Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. Every one of them slowed down and looked back at him. Then they all turned around and went back to him – every one of them. One girl with Down’s Syndrome bent down and kissed him on the forehead, saying “This will make it better.” Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there still get emotional every time they tell this story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is not in being first or being number one; but what matters most is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

Now that you know how wonderful it is to give, would you go out to the world and share your blessings?

FIRST LOVE RECOVERY MINISTRY

The Good Success Society

Joshua 1:8(KJV)
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
Psalm 1:1-3(KJV)
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”
“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
‘The Good Success Society’ is a universal society of people who meant to have ‘good success’.
What is ‘good success’?
A comparison with ’success’ will make its definition clear.
‘Success’ is being, doing,or having what one wants to be,do,or have.
‘Good success’ is being, doing, and having what God wants one to be,do,or have.
Therefore,’success’ becomes ‘good success’ when one wants what God wants for oneself;or simply put, when God’s will becomes one’s will.
This is only possible when one enters a covenant relationship with God by receiving Jesus Christ as one’s personal Lord and Saviour(John 1:12).
One becomes a new member of ‘the Good Success Society’.
It is not enough to be a member of ‘the Good Success Society’ to really have ‘good success’.
Based upon this divine relationship, there are three things stated in the first scripture above(Joshua 1:8) that are relevant for one to carry out before one can really enjoy ‘good success’:-
Communication:God speaks to everyone of his children who are members of ‘the Good Success Society’ through his word(the bible) by his Spirit.
2 Tim.3:16-17(KJV)
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
“That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
God’s children delight in hearing and reading his word regularly because they love him just like lovers delight in hearing and reading each other’s words!

Meditation:This is the spiritual discipline that one must exercise upon whatever portion of God’s word communicated to one, just like when a cow chews the cuds.
Psalm 119:97(KJV)
“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.”
Through meditation, one receives positive thoughts of ‘good success’ from God though his word by his Spirit:
1 Cor.2:9-10(KJV)
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”
“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”

Observation:This is the process by which one notices what God is specifically speaking to one through what one has meditated;and then one acts in faith and obedience motivated by one’s love for God and for others as well as oneself.
Positive thoughts from God received through one’s meditation are always meant to be translated by the indwelling Spirit into positive words and works for God through one’s observation!
Rom.10:17(KJV)
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
James 1:22(KJV)
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
James 1:25(KJV)
“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
Matt. 22:37 -39(KJV)
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
“This is the first and great commandment. “
“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

‘Good success’ is therefore guaranteed by God himself as one hears God’s word, meditates upon it,and finally acts upon it with the help of the Holy Spirit.
A complete and beautiful picture of ‘good success’ is the state of ‘blessedness’(Psalm 1:1) seen in the third verse of the second set of scriptures above(Psalm 1:1-3).
This pleasant imagery is a vivid representation of the fulfillment of one’s destiny.
A fruitful tree is the fulfillment of the sown fruit seed from which it grew.
The fulfillment of destiny can be likened to the possession of the promised land of Canaan by the children of Israel led by Joshua.
From the time of Joshua received the word of God in Joshua chapter1 to the possession of Canaan by Israel, there were battles that had to be fought and won!
From the time the fruit seed is sown to the time that the fruit tree bears fruit, the plant has to face and overcome various challenges such as the elements and pests.
From the time one receives the word of God as a seed into one’s heart, one has to encounter victoriously different inner and/or outer challenges, before one can really enjoy ‘good success’!
In this regard, members of ‘the Good Success Society’ help one another in love so that their individual and collective destinies can be fulfilled:
Judges 1:3(KJV)
“And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.”

While one may have ‘good success’ and not be recognised in the Guinness Book of Records, one’s good report is precious and pleasant in the sight of God(Heb.11:2,6,38)!
One’s good report gives information on how one has been fulfilling one’s individual and corporate destiny as a member of ‘the Good Success Society’!
God is glorified through the good report of every member of ‘the Good Success Society’ as its ‘Grand Patron’ just like parents are proud about their successful children!
Finally, every human being on earth today is invited by and through Jesus Christ to become a member of ‘the Good Success Society’ of which he is the Head!

The Cursed

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children,
and the heart of the children to their fathers,
lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Malachi 4:5-6

~ * ~

My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John 4:34

I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat.

I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. Psalm 143:6

I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Hebrews 11:13

I was a stranger, and ye took me not in.

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 2 Cor. 5:1-3

I was naked, and ye clothed me not.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick … Proverbs 13:12 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:14

I was sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked,
and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace.

1 Cor. 4:11

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Isaiah 58:6-7

When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels
with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before
him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one
from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And
he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

~ * ~

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand,
Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire,
prepared for the devil and his angels …

Inasmuch as ye did it not to one
of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment:
but the righteous into life eternal.

Revelations A Study. Section 13.

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Revelations A Study. Section 13. Chapter 17:1 thru 19:3, The judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters. The anti-christ, to try to defeat Jesus must take as many kingdoms as he can by force, to gain a great army. He also knows prophecy but still trys to change it. Rev 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters = :peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
Rev 17:2 = A false sense of Power.
Rev 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit = not in body, into the wilderness = of man: and I saw a woman {Dan_7:23;} sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads = seven mountains = seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come = {Dan_12:4, Dan_12:8-10; Hos_14:9; Mat_13:11, Mat_24:15}; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space, on which the woman sitteth.and ten horns = ten kings.
Rev 17:4 = Earthly Riches.
Rev 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. = False religion. This introduces us to the one world religion that many Kings are speaking of today to help stop war.
Rev 17:6 thru 17:7 are Literial and self explanitory.
Rev 17:8 The beast = Satan, that thou sawest was, and is not = Satan is present but without power.; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition = Hell [Ref:Mar_9:44;] and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when {dont let this next line confuse you. Satan at this point “was” “But without Power”,”But His day hasnt come yet.”,}they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Rev 17:11 thru Rev 17:14. Literial and self explanitory. The Ten Kings are the Kings, of this moment, of the ten kingdoms of the old Roman Empire. Which you have allready been given a list. The anti-christ makes war on ten kingdoms, he takes the first three by force and theother seven capitulate.Giveing the anti-christ power over all 10. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Rev 17:16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. [Very important References; Eze_16:37-44, Eze_23:45-49; Dan_2:40-43, Dan_7:7, Dan_7:8, Dan_7:20,Dan_7:24; Zec_1:18-21]

Rev 17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
Rev 17:18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. This last verse indicates that it is Rome. Why? Look at the wording; “great city”, which “reigneth” “over the kings of the earth”. Rome in scripture is always mentioned haveing great power and vast rule.In early Roman Hystory, the Pope of Rome ordered the Idols of Babylon, to be removed and brought to Rome and be re-dedicated to God. This act was against Scripture. Babylon, that mighty city. Rev 18:1 thru Rev 19:3 are literial and self explainitory. “I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.” “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen” “the merchants of the earth are waxed rich”
Rev 18:12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
Rev 18:13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
Rev 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness= the quality possessed by something with a great price or value! for in one hour is she made desolate. The next question most people ask is,”What City is Babylon?” Babylon is not only a city but a religion. If we look close at the description of the city we can eliminate 99% of all countries of the world. There are three destinct intrepretations of what the city is. The First is, Babylon Iraq, which still stand, thou in great ruin. The second is Rome with her controll of religion in many nations of the Earth. The Third, which I believe is most likely, is New York City. The Tradeing Center of the World. New York sea ports, financial institutions, N.Y.S.Exchange, Nasdac, ect. and trade centers. We will get into greator detail on the city in our study of Daniel. end section 13.

Law v. Grace

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Various Views on Law and Gospel…

Terry Dashner……………..Faith Fellowship Church PO Box 1586 Broken Arrow, OK 74013

How does a believer reconcile the ostensible antithesis of Grace and the Law of Moses? The Church has struggled with this marriage (or divorce, depending on what camp you’re in) since the Church was birthed on the Day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two. What does the Bible say? I will share with you some of the relevant scriptures and let you sort out the continuity or discontinuity between the twolaw and grace.

Wayne G. Strickland, professor of theology and co-chair of the Bible and theology department, Multnomah School of the Bible and ardent dispensationalist states, “The resolution of the Law/Gospel debate is no simple exercise, but neither is it a trivial issue. Among the theological issues raised by Paul, this one has perpetually been regarded as one of great significance.” I certainly agree. And why?

Strickland continues, “There are compelling reasons to understand a basic discontinuity between Old and New Testaments. The justification stems from the entrance into the new covenant and various New Testament passages where the discontinuity is clearly presented.” He then sites a number of scriptures, underscoring the discontinuity. For example, Hebrews 7:12, says he, “states plainly that a drastic change has occurred because a different priesthood has been placed into operation.”

He continues, “The clearest evidence for the discontinuity position derives from many passages in the New Testament that suggest the cessation of the Mosaic law as binding for the church-age saint: Romans 3:21-31; 4:5, 13-25; 5:13; 6:14-15; 7:6; 10:4; I Corinthians 9:19-23; 2 Corinthians 3:3, 6-18; Galatians 2:19; 3:1-5, 10-29;…”

Nevertheless just when you think the Bible frees you from the Law of Moses based upon proof texts like these mentioned above, you read other scriptures that swing to the other end. These scriptures are Matthew 5:17-19; Mark 7:1-23; Romans 7:12, 14, 22; and I Timothy 1:8 which are marshaled in evidence of the continuity of Law and the Gospel. What is a believer to do (or believe)?

There are five views regarding the Law and the Gospel.

Zondervan Publishing House of Grand Rapids, Michigan, has put together a book entitled, Five Views on Law and Gospel. Five scholars present their views regarding Law and Grace and then each one in turn critiques the writer’s stated view. It’s a slow read because of the material presented, but I have persevered and waded through the book for you. I’d like to make just a few comments regarding Willem A. VanGemeren’s Reformed perspective and Wayne G. Stricland’s Dispensational view. These two views make the most sense to me.

First allow me to state the five views as listed in the subtitles. One view isthe Law which takes on perfection of righteousness in Jesus Christ: A Reformed perspective. The second view isthe Theonomic Reformed approach to Law and Gospel. The third isthe Law as God’s gracious guidance for the promotion of holiness. The fourth isthe inauguration of the Law of Christ with the Gospel of Christ: A Dispensational view. And finally, the Law of Christ as the fulfillment of the Law of Moses: A modified Lutheran view. For the sake of brevity, I will attempt to state what each view has in common and refrain from the dissents. (The dissent goes on and on and on for pages on end).

What each view has in common.

Each of the five views holds this in common. The Mosaic Law was not the means of salvation in the Old Testament. Salvation has always been by faith in God and not in observing an external law. For example, scholar Greg L. Bahnsen, regarding his critique of VanGemeren states, “For VanGemeren, the Mosaic covenant was ‘not antithetical to’ nor a ’substitute’ for the Abrahamic promise, but it looked ahead to the unique Redeemer and Mediator of the covenant, Jesus Christ. Even ‘the Mosaic covenant is a sovereign administration of grace.’ He insists that ‘the law was never intended to be the means of salvation’ (even at Lev. 18:5). To all of this we reply with a hearty ‘amen.’”

VanGemeren’s Reformed view wraps up with these words, “Moreover, knowing the deceptions of our hearts, we must constantly check ourselves by the moral law to see whether we truly love our neighbor as ourselves. Love for neighbor is the thermometer by which we check the extent of our love for God, obedience to his law, and our dependence on the Lord for life.

“Let me end on a personal note. I cannot keep God’s law unless I live by the grace of God, in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and by the power of his Spirit. I need his grace every day to help me in the discipline of my heart and in imaging the perfections of the Lord Jesus. It is my prayer that by God’s grace I may enhance order where there is harmony and promote order where there is discord. Come, Lord Jesus, come!”

Therefore, salvation in God has always beeneven for Abraham who came before the Mosaic Lawby faith in God. Faith is the connection, and God is the object of our faith. The Mosaic Law had its “special place” in educating the Nation Israel regarding the coming of Messiah. The Law was to ready them for the atoning work of Jesus Christ. The “blood of bulls and goats,” as stated in the book of Hebrews, was only a temporary covering (Atonement) which was repeated every year. Faith in Christ is permanent and everlasting as Atonement for the sinner. Thank God!

Final remarks from each author

Noting the Reformed view, VanGemeren concludes his essay by saying, “Ethical integrity is a wholeness of life. As we keep the moral law, pursue the perfection of righteousness in union with Jesus Christ, and walk by the power of the Spirit, we develop wholeness, a wholeness that involves the integration of our heart, speech, acts, and manners with the mind of Christ.” The Reformed view seems to favor a balance between the moral law and the Gospel. It is by grace alone that we are justified, but sanctification (growing up in Christ) requires obedience to the moral law of God. This makes sense to me; however, it is not without criticism.

Moreover, noting the Theonomic Reformed View, Greg L. Bahnsen concludes his essay by stating, “Beyond this, Christians should use the lawful means that are available in any particular society to work toward reconstruction of the legal, judicial, and political framework of that society. Christian legislators, judges, magistrates, and aides ought to work for progressive amendment of the statutes and legal proceedings of the state, bringing them more and more into harmony with the principles of God’s law for political authorities.”

Bahnsen’s view is radical but noble; however, it’s unlikely to happen in our lifetime. Bahnsen’s view suggests that Christian should live by the Old Testament Lawmoral and civilin home, society, and country. Again, it seems unlikely that the church would be willing to stone to death a man or woman caught in the act of adultery. America doesn’t prosecute fornication or adultery because in a promiscuous society, such as ours, too many would take the fall.

Strickland’s Dispensational view concludes on this note. “Nonetheless, as has been discovered, there is an aspect of the law that has ceased in its validity and applicability. The regulatory purpose recognizes that the Mosaic law was given specifically to the nation Israel in order to provide guidelines for their relationship to God. This regulatory purpose provided the requirement and means of fellowship, including the provision for the worship of God. The Mosaic law also served to govern Israel as a theocracy with a unique relationship to God. However, when Israel failed in its stewardship responsibilities under the Mosaic dispensation, the law in its regulatory function ceased in validity. Paul is equally clear that the law functioned in a temporary fashion as a tutor until the advent of Christ (Gal. 3:24), whereupon it ceased as a means of righteousness (Rom. 10:4). The Mosaic law, described as a ministry of death (2Cor. 3:7), faded and no longer remains (v. 11), leaving the hope that is found in the person of Jesus Christ. Instead, the New Testament believer is governed by the law of Christ, a law that is fulfilled by loving one’s neighbor (Gal. 5:14; 6:2).”

The point Strickland seems to make is this. The moral law or the Ten Commandments is no longer an external thing to which a Christian tries to align his or her conduct before God. The moral law or the law of Christ is now written on the heart of the believer. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the believer is helped to overcome lust, greed, licentiousness, and other works of the flesh that lead to overt acts of breaking God’s commandments. In doing so, the believer now lives by the power of the spirit, not by the works of the flesh.

And then there is scholar Walter C. Kaiser Jr. who asserts the following. It is the moral law of God found in the Decalogue and the Holiness Code of Leviticus 18-19 that must act as the absolute norms against which all other commands in God’s law are judged, interpreted, and applied to today. The hunger for someone to give the believing community instruction in the proper use of law is so great that one popular seminar since 1986, focusing on Proverbs (a veritable republication of the law of God in proverbial form, as can be seen from the marginal references to Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), has literally had tens of thousands of people swarming to its sessions in every major city in North America and now all over the world. This is an indictment on the church and its reticence to preach the moral law of God and to apply it to all aspects of life as indicated in Scripture.”

Here again, the emphasis is upon the moral law’s use in the sanctification of the believer. John Calvin spoke in this regard during the Reformation period of Church history. (It sounds logical to me, but not without some concerns.)

And last, Douglas J. Moo states this, “…I have stressed, to say that the Mosaic law in itself is no longer binding on the Christian is not to say that individual commandments within that law may not be. In fact, as we have seen, New Testament authors explicitly ‘reapply’ several Mosaic commandments to the Christian…The content of all but one of the Ten Commandments is taken up into ‘the law of Christ,’ for which we are responsible. I am not, then, suggesting that the essential ‘moral’ content of the Mosaic law is not applicable to believers. On the ‘bottom line’ question of what Christians are actually to do, I could well find myself in complete agreement with, say, a colleague who takes a traditional Reformed approach to the Mosaic law. The difference would lie not in what Christians are to do but in how it is to be discovered. While my Reformed colleague might argue that we are bound to whatever in Mosaic law has not been clearly overturned by New Testament teaching, I argue that we are bound only to that which is clearly repeated within New Testament teaching.”

Bringing it all together, hopefully.

The views have been briefly stated in conclusion. Overall what seems to ring true in every view is this. Justification for all believers, past and present, has been by faith in God through Jesus Christ. The Mosaic Law was uniquely given to a covenant people (already justified) who heralded God as their King. The law was for the sanctifying purpose of the covenant people, while maintaining civil order through God’s civil and moral laws. The ceremonial laws were to tutor the nation of Israel to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The new covenant with its focus on grace does not abolish all elements of the Mosaic law because the Church must progress along, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit to overcome the sin of the world. Grace for the church age does not mean freedom FROM law, but it means freedom from sin’s breach of God’s moral law. Sin no longer has a dominate hold on the believer once she is born again and living in the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe it all comes down to this. There has always been, and will always be, a need to live a balanced Christian life. The balance is grace on the one hand and God’s law on the other, a picture of the perfect scales of justice.

Keep the faith. Stay the course. Jesus is coming again.

It’s Called Jewish Music, But Is It Really Jewish?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

A while back I was driving along the Jerusalem highway scanning the radio stations. On one frequency, a very intense dance beat was exploding out of the speakers. I was about to move the dial some more in search of a Jewish tune when the vocalist started in. Shock of shocks, he was a heavily Hassidic singer, complete with eastern European pronunciation. And what was he singing? “Kumee oy’ree ki va oy-reich..” from 16th century Rabbi Shlomo Alkavetz’ classic Sabbath poem, L’cha Dodi. Before he had began his rendition I had been expecting something like “Oh baby, the way you move with me …”!

I had to ask the old question, “Is this good for the Jews?” And I had to give the old answer, “Does hair grow on the palm of your hand?”

Of course it’s not good for the Jews, I felt. Poor, unfortunate L’cha Dodi, dragged from the fields of Tsfat on the Sabbath eve and infected with Saturday Night Fever! Lovingly done by a Hassid, no less!

Speaking of Tsfat, I recall meandering about their Klezmer festival once and hearing a contemporary setting of Psalm 126. It was to a funk rhythm, and the words did not fit. The singer had to split words in two, which rendered them more or less meaningless. Good for the Jews? Nah.

What bothered me about this so-called Jewish music? To put it briefly, besides the words, it just wasn’t. It was dance, trance, shmantz. It was hip, driving, suggestive. If this music was asked where it wanted to play, the synagogue or the sin-skin club, the answer was clear. If Jewish music is to be defined as such, it must have authentic Jewish roots. And so much contemporary music simply does not. Where was the source of this tradition? Nowhere. That’s what bothered me.

But, as Tevye reminds us, there’s another hand. After all, go listen to classic Hassidic nigunim (melodies). Then go listen to Russian folk songs. Eerie, no? Weren’t those folk songs the “dance” of their day?

Even stronger, go watch the religious kids. They love contemporary popular music and all its villains. What these new Jewish groups do is take what’s hip and put Jewish content into it. Isn’t that what the original Hassidic nigunim were all about? If we don’t want to lose our young people in the culture war, we have to compete. Didn’t Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch bring the choral works of Lewandowsky and Japhet in to the synagogue service, even though they were completely in the style of the German composers of the age, such as Schubert and Mendelssohn (he needs an asterisk because he was halakhically Jewish)? So maybe I should not only calm down, I should applaud this phenomenon.

Hold on. We’re both right, I believe. Here’s how I reconcile the difference, and my earnest appeal to all who create Jewish music. The most important thing is to ask, “To be or not to be?” That is the question.

Every song has a purpose, a message. It can be joy, faith, pensiveness, determination, anything. The message is in the melody and rhythm, which create the atmosphere. It’s in the text, which gives articulation to the message. And it’s in the performance, which makes the message personal between the performer and the listener. If the message is congruent, if the music and the lyrics are a perfect union that inspires the performer, then you have a great piece of music. If the message is mixed, if there’s a battle going on between the rhythm and the words, then we are troubled. That was why that “kumee oy’ree” was so absolutely awful. It was a mixed message of licentious music with holy texts.

We love to set verses from the liturgy to music, and that’s wonderful. Composers have a special responsibility to make sure that the music conveys the message and colors the words with deeper meanings. Do that, and I’m fascinated, I’m inspired, even if it’s a contemporary style.

But be very, very careful with verses. We tend to ask, “Do you think Adon Olam goes to this?”, when we would do better to ask, “What is this melody saying?”. If it says Adon Olam, good. If it does not, then WRITE YOUR OWN WORDS. To keep with the idea of message, if you have a great tune that can say something worthwhile (something human and real, not negative or immodest), say it your way. That satisfies.

The foundation of Jewish music has always been expressing what’s in our hearts as a prayer to God. That expression must be congruent, pure, sincere. There is room in the Jewish music world for great innovation, if it comes from our hearts, not from the charts.

Is a World Dictator About to Appear?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

As the Plain Truth declared back in 1966, “Just as the Catholic Church once
interposed her order on nations and peoples, she again is proposing to establish a ‘Christian order’ which alone is able to guarantee peace. To this goal the resources of the Church now are directed.’ So said the late Pope Pius in a Christmas broadcast on December 24, 1951″ (Plain Truth, July 1966)…

The Plain Truth also encouraged its readers to “Look for the Vatican to exert more influence in European affairs. Yugoslavia and the Vatican have resumed full diplomatic relations—a move that could lead to further ties between the Vatican and Eastern Europe…. The pope, encouraging European political unity, stated, ‘We note with pleasure that the German government contributes actively to the achievement of this aim.’ Vatican influence over European affairs is destined to grow in the months ahead” (Plain Truth, Aug./Sept. 1970)…

Is a World Dictator About to Appear?

Now, in our time, we’ll see how influential this German pope is in implementing Germany and the Jesuit’s GRAND DESIGN….

The German pope will promote a leader for the theo-cons and they’ll fall for it.

Germany will win WWIII – and their EU jackboot will be permitted to stomp on the American, British and Jewish peoples primarily. But their days are numbered as Providence has given them three and one half years, and God will judge them if they engage in overkill and show no mercy. He will let them conquer us, but that doesn’t mean God approves of them turning into a bloodthirsty BEAST.

O Israelites! Who could beat Great Britain in battle, or whip the U.S. in war, when God shed His grace on thee? Europe could NEVER knock us down and kick us around – until now! Because GOD’S REFINING OUR GOLD IN THE FURNACE OF AFFLICTION, AND PURIFYING OUR SILVER THROUGH GREAT TRIBULATION (Isa. 48:10)!

Europe’s not without sin: God’s going to deal with them shortly (Deut. 32:27-43). Europe’s simply the last vestige of Babylon, the scarlet daughter of the Gentile system, destined to crash at Christ’s coming (Dan. 2:34)! They’re simply building up God’s case against them: their leaders will be brought to trial and found guilty! God’s going to close down their occult operations, and BURN their WHOREHOUSE to the ground! Interestingly, it’ll be the Europeans themselves who TORCH THE PLACE (Rev. 17:16)!

Europe’s going to be burning mad, and their citizens express fiery indignation, when they realize the full extent of ROME’S MANIPULATION! For awhile, it’ll seem that it served their selfish interests to support the Catholic Church. Both big business and the political community will endorse this new global enterprise (Rev. 18:9-11)

Europe’s Roman Catholic roots will have appeared to be a stabilizing force, giving different nations some common ground. But the “Catholic services” haven’t come cheap: they’ve escorted select politicians to power, delivering them the people’s vote, in exchange for strict enforcement of Church policy! Within the framework of the “Holy Roman Empire,” they’ve laid the groundwork for Europe’s future!

The Vatican will work out a deal with 10 European kings, with seductive offers of restoring them to political life, upon their now dormant thrones, in return for the favor of acknowledging the supremacy of the POPE and his chosen! The ratification of this imminent Church-State union will be swept through by the MALIGNANT MIRACLES the pope will perform in the presence of Europe’s new EMPEROR! The pope will mislead the people to presume his miracles are proof that Providence has chosen such an individual to rule Europe and save the world (Rev. 13:14)!

Europe’s body politic awaits this infusion of soul to truly come alive. What crisis will occur to coerce Europe to hastily accept the pope’s proposal to recreate the continent in his image? A hungry Russian bear? An interrupted oil supply or Iranian nuclear threat? Nevertheless, Germany stands ready to defend the Catholic faith and Western “Christian” Civilization against destruction, but in doing so will actually ignite World War III! The German-EU will bring mankind to the brink of utter destruction, demanding DIVINE INTERVENTION to save Earth’s inhabitants from extinction! (Matt. 24:22).
